Tabby Talk: Reading Time

Tabby Talk Banner

Tabby Talk is a discussion post I thought I'd do occasionally where I'll share my random thoughts on something and include my cat in them ;)

Today, I want to ask everyone a simple question. When do you read? More specifically, when do you find the time to read? A lot of bloggers I know are either students or moms. The students need to go to class, do homework and study, to name a few things and the moms have kid(s) to take care of so.....when do you have time to sit down and just read without interruptions? I have this little one bugging me for attention when I get home. Not that I'm complaining ;)

Lately, I've been feeling like I don't have time to read at all. I work a full time job (like a lot of you do I'm sure), eight hours a day (not including the commute of 40mins each way) five days a week, I'm exhausted by the time I get home. Sometimes I don't even feel like doing anything! Normally I go through my routine (shower, eat, chores, etc.) and by the time I'm done with everything, it's almost bed time. Add in the time I need to write reviews, schedule posts, visit and comment on other blogs, where has my reading time gone?!?!?

Ironically, the one place I used to get steady reading time from was at work. I spend my one hour of lunch break reading. Sometimes if work isn't too busy, I can squeeze in even more reading time. Now, because I'm taking on more tasks at work, even that reading time's shrinking. It's depressing for me just to think about how little I've been reading :(

I'm curious how other bloggers manage their time. Please share your thoughts with me!

  1. Now that I don't work, I have no time to read. It sucks. I used to read during my lunch for an uninterrupted hour and now, it feels like I always have something I have to do. Thank goodness for audiobooks!

    1. I thought it would be the other way around but I definitely get what you mean! Sometimes working actually makes us read. I really want to try an audiobook!

  2. This is a good question! I read whenever I can squeeze it in for the most part and some days are just better than others. I read when I exercise and I will after the kids are in bed if my husband is still working or has something else he is doing. Otherwise, I try to make an hour or two each day sometime during the day when the kids are still off at school and all the household stuff is done.

  3. I wish I could get some reading time during the day! I usually squeeze in an hour or two at night before I go to sleep as the house is nice and quiet, everyone - including my dog - is asleep :) Since I began blogging, my reading time has shrunk so much. Any free time I have I'm usually thinking I could be writing a review, or replying to comments rather than reading. Blogging things usually take up so much more time than I plan for!

    1. That is EXACTLY me!! I always want to read but then think that I should probably be scheduling posts Doing that ends up taking away from my reading time :( I wish I could find that balance...

  4. Great question. Sometimes I wonder how I find time to read myself. I tend to read mostly when I'm commuting. Waiting for the bus, on the bus, etc. I also tend to listen to audiobooks at work and when I'm doing things around the house. Plus I try to make time at night when I'm trying to relax. Some days it's easier then others.

    1. So nice that you can read on the bus. I usually get dizzy and end up with a headache if I attempt that :S Maybe it's time I try some audiobooks! I've been talking forever about it haha.

  5. I usually do most of my reading at night, like late at night, since I work 3 to 10 pm shifts at work. I usually read till 3 or 4 am and then wake up late, 10 am if I have errands, 11 am if I don't and 12 pm if I'm particularly exhausted. Reading at night works because it helps keeping my brain busy until I'm feeling really sleepy.

On my days off reading time can be a lot of the day, if I have no plans with my friends or errands to run, and if I do have plans... again night reading!

    1. I'm pretty much doing night reading too! Sometimes I just can't the book down and end up sleeping way past my bedtime. Then I can't get up in the morning and I feel so tired at work. It's a bad cycle haha but reading's worth it ;)

  6. I've been known to carry my iPad and a physical book at any given time. I do this because during winter, it's dark when I leave the house in the morning, and it's dark when I go home in the evening. My husband usually drives so when it's dark, I read on my iPad, and when it's light, I crack open the book. I also read on my lunch hour at work, and pretty much when I have a downtime. When I'm at the gym, I listen to an audiobook. :)

    1. You have the prefect routine down! I wish I could read when I'm in the car but I get headaches and those are so not fun :( It's seriously time for me to try an audiobook eh ;)

  7. Your cat is cute C: Also, I would love to have a part-time job next to my studies, but no one ever wants to give a 16 year old work ><

  8. Reading time, hahaha what reading time?! I hardly have any because of schools and extra curriculars, I do my best to find time though. It's mostly in the 12AM - 1AM time frame or some weekends when I do get to read. It's sad. Awesome post!

    1. School is definitely a handful. I'm glad you still manage to find time to read though! On weekends, I just want to hole up in my bed and read but that never happens lol.

  9. Great question! I usually wake up an hour or two (sometimes) earlier than my littles, and that is where I sneak in a few chapters or so. Also, because I have three year old who still takes naps in the afternoon, I tend to use the time where I lay him down to read. Not to mention, we are a homeschool family, so a great deal of reading takes place in this home. That's how it works out for me at least.

For the most part, these seasons are temporary, don't be sad (although you have all the right to be).

  10. I plan all my posts, and I don't read more than I can manage. With two jobs and a social life, time isn't what I've got most of. But I love reading, so whenever I need to relax, it's what I do.

  12. Awesome topic! It's crazy, we all love reading so much, but real life keeps sneaking in to ruin all of our fun, dang it! (lol) Most days, I don't even know where the time goes, but I try to read something everyday. People have become used to me traveling with 3 books wherever I go. Meanwhile, the TBR pile just keeps growing, and growing and growing... Hugs

    1. I just want to put real life on pause so I can read! Haha 3 books sound crazy! One is heavy enough for me to carry everywhere :P

  13. I mostly read on my days off. I try to get in some reading time either before work if I'm closing shift, or after work if I'm opening shift. But there's always so many other things I need to get done, that my days off are when I have the most time to read.

I recently got an exercise bike, and I've been reading while using it. That works really well because I'm not paying attention to how long I've been on the bike, I just set the timer and start reading until the buzzer goes off.

    1. That sounds so great! You don't even feel like you're exercising since you're also doing something you love! I need to look into getting an exercise bike :D

  14. I read whenever I can -- including while brushing my teeth, doing the dishes, and walking around the house (yes, this has caused some accidents). I have a handy little "book chair" that props up my book so I can read hands free (works for ereaders too). And I have an exercise bike that also does not require arm involvement so I can read while exercising. I hope you can find some reading time, though it's never really enough!

    1. I don't want to get any water or anything on my books so I tend to shy away from reading near water sources. But I applaud you for being able to multitask so well!!! I find it extremely hard to prop open a book with any tools. I always have to hold it haha.

  15. (Almost) every night for at least 10 minutes before I go to bed. I started listening to books on my commute. And sometimes, if I wake up early, I read before my alarm goes off. If I read for long stretches on the weekends, it usually turns into a nap. :)

  16. I used to read a lot more, but lately my reading time has gone way down. I homeschool my kids, but there's usually times where they're working independently that I can fit in some reading. Lately, I've been spending that time responding to comments and commenting back. And now that I'm editing a lot more, that takes up what used to be my "free" time. It all adds up to less reading, unfortunately.

  17. I will usually read audio books as I'm doing work or riding the bus. I am having trouble finding a balance, so if you find one let me know.
