Secret Identities. Extraordinary Powers. She wants vengeance. He wants justice.

As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone...except the villains they once overthrew.

Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice—and in Nova. But Nova's allegiance is to a villain who has the power to end them both.

Review

There's so much I could say about Renegades but each one would essentially be the same gushing for everyone to read this book. Marissa Meyer once again hits the bull's eye with this newest work of hers. It's thought-provoking and tons of fun.

The story in Renegades was one I didn't know I needed until I read it. It was complex yet easy to understand (trust me, with a little bit of time you will get all the superhero names down). The unpredictable storyline filled the atmosphere with anticipation and suspense. I never really knew where the story was going until the events unfolded right then and there. Even with the moments where we don't yet have the whole story you just know it's going to be good. "One cannot be brave who has no fear." (ARC, p. 50).

The world-building was simply amazing. Yes it's a superhero story but it's not your typical cut and dried black and white world. Marissa Meyer's writing makes you sympathize with the villains and doubt the heroes. Do the so-called heroes really deserve all the praises? Are the villains really that awful? With an antihero at the center of the story Renegades explores the mentality of good and bad. That thin line that separates them.

Our main POV is through the eyes of Nova, a girl raised by the villains who has every right to hate the Renegades (though I’m sensing there’s more to that story) and want their downfall. She's suppose to be bad but honestly besides her connection to the Anarchists, nothing about her screamed evil. "There was the potential for evil everywhere, and the only way to combat it was if more people chose goodness. If more people chose heroism. Not laziness. Not apathy. Not indifference." (ARC, p. 474). Seeing Nova in action made me an instant fan. Her quick reflex and quiet wit were too easy to like.

Most of the characters in Renegades were volatile and tricky but it added that extra excitement to not knowing how these prodigies would act. Some had such unique powers while others were just downright disturbing but I definitely loved learning about each one. Adrian's ability seemed especially handy given his penchant for helping people. With the Renegades solidifying their presence as a governing body I couldn't help feeling a little bad for the deteriorating bond between the Anarchists. When the answer should have been obvious Marissa Meyer has me unsure of which side to root for. It's a tough but realistic world.

The romance in Renegades is really a background act considering the bigger storyline. However it features a complicated slow burn forbidden relationship so cue the swoons. Adrian was sweet as hell and Nova was surprisingly delicate. A tad ironic given they were each searching for the other. Albeit unknowingly. What could possibly go wrong...right?

Can't say I didn't see that ending coming because I did. There is much unfinished business at the end of Renegades and knowing this is a duology makes me eager for the next and final installment. Will we see the end of the Anarchists once and for all or will the Renegades meet their demise? I look forward to more badassery. Bring it on Marissa Meyer!
